Abbess found!

Only 12 portraits of the 39 abbesses of Quedlinburg have survived – but the new exhibition aims to show them all. So we went in search of them.

The call for participants received an overwhelming response: a total of 101 women from Quedlinburg, the Harz district and all over Germany applied to portray the abbess. Twenty-four women were selected from among them and professionally photographed on 23 August 2025. The resulting portraits are currently being digitally enhanced with historical clothing and accessories. This creates realistic images that impressively combine history and the present.
